Professional Nurses at your Services | Legal And Safe Abortion Services

Women considering abortions need to understand the risks and options  available that are in the best interest  of her health, safety and welfare because no form of contraception is 100 per cent effective.

Women will always need straightforward access to abortion services as a back-up if they are to plan their lives and families in the best way they see fit.

Medical abortion is not the same as emergency contraception known as morning-after pill or Plan B.

Emergency contraception prevents pregnancy and can work for up to five days after having unprotected sex whereas a Medical Abortion is the early termination of a pregnancy using a pill.

Abortion Pills

The abortion pill, commonly referred to as non-surgical abortion, is used during a medical abortion for the purpose of terminating a pregnancy. A medical abortion does not involve surgery or anesthesia. The abortion pills can be taken either in the abortion clinic or at home with follow-up visits to your healthcare provider. It is considered the safest and most effective way to end a pregnancy during the first and second trimester.

How medical abortion works – Step by step:

1. Day 1 at the clinic: After your scan and consultation, you swallow the first tablet, Mifepristone, with water at our clinic. This blocks the hormone progesterone and stops the pregnancy from growing. You can go home after 30 minutes. Most people feel normal after this tablet.

2. Day 2-3 at home: 24-48 hours later, you place 4 tablets of Misoprostol in your cheeks, under your tongue, or vaginally as instructed. This causes the uterus to cramp and expel the pregnancy. Bleeding and cramping usually start 1-4 hours after Misoprostol and are heaviest for 4-6 hours. It is similar to a heavy period or early miscarriage.

3. Day 14 follow-up: You return for a check-up or do a home pregnancy test as instructed. We confirm the abortion is complete. Over 95% of medical abortions are successful. If tissue remains, a free womb cleaning procedure is included.

What to expect: Cramping, bleeding with clots, nausea, and diarrhoea are normal. We give you strong pain relief and anti-nausea tablets. You should have someone with you at home. Bleeding typically lasts 9-16 days, getting lighter each day. You can return to work after 1-2 days.

Surgical Abortion (MVA)

Right after your pre-operative assessment has been completed, you will be prepared for the surgery and escorted to the operating room for the procedure. During the surgery, there will be approximately about 2-3 medical staff in the operating room with you (depending on your individual needs).

Surgical Abortion in Durban: What to Expect

Surgical abortion is a safe, minor procedure done at our clinic for pregnancies from 6 to 20 weeks, or by choice under 10 weeks. It is also called “aspiration abortion” or D&C. It is completed in one visit and you go home the same day.

What happens on the day:

1. Preparation: After your consultation and scan, you change into a gown. We start conscious sedation through a drip. You will be relaxed and drowsy but breathing on your own. A local anaesthetic is also used so you do not feel pain.

2. The procedure: Dr Jennifer uses a thin, sterile tube to gently empty the uterus with suction. The procedure takes 5-10 minutes for first trimester and 15-20 minutes for second trimester. You may feel pressure but not sharp pain due to the sedation.

3. Recovery: You rest in our recovery room for 45-60 minutes with a nurse monitoring you. We give you tea, juice, and something to eat. Once the sedation wears off and you can walk, you may go home. You must have someone to drive you.

After surgery: Bleeding is usually lighter than a period and lasts 3-7 days. Cramping is mild. You are given antibiotics, pain tablets, and a 24/7 number. Most people return to work after 1-2 days. Do not insert anything vaginally or have sex for 2 weeks to prevent infection.

Advantages: Quick, done in one visit, less bleeding than pills, 99% effective, doctor confirms completion immediately.

Disadvantages: Requires clinic visit, anaesthetic, slightly higher cost than pills.
